Prevent a Hangover with Potato Chips

September 17th, 2007 Josh

Recently, I heard from a friend that the best way to prevent a hangover is to eat a bunch of potato chips before going out.  While certainly not the healthiest method, after a few weekends of experimentation I’ve found  it works pretty well!

Potato chips aren’t the only part of the formula though.  In this post I will cover why eating potato chips may work, and other tips to prevent hangovers you can combine with the potato tip trick to result in a happy morning.

7 Little things to make yourself happier, today.

September 5th, 2007 Josh

People always say it is the ‘little things’ in life that make you happier. Well, here are 7 of them that take only a few minutes to do and will certainly brighten your day. Go ahead, smile.

1. Listen to a few songs from your favorite old Disney movie

Everyone has fond memories of their favorite Disney cartoons. Personally, I like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. After a long day a little ‘Circle of Life’ or ‘Gaston’ will pick me right back up.

Don’t already have the mp3s of these classics? Check out my guide to finding mp3s with Google.

2. Do someone else an unexpected favor

You always feel good after doing something nice for someone you care about, or even a perfect stranger. In this case, your motivation is a bit selfish - but hey, it’s a win-win situation.

3. Call your grandma

Those we love can make us feel happy with only the sound of their voice. Give your grandmother a ring, or any other relative of your choosing. It will make them happy to know you were thinking of them, and you can share a recent accomplishment or story and feel good about it. No one is more proud than our grandma’s.

The College Guide to Sleeping

September 3rd, 2007 Josh

Sleep is a vital part of our lives. While a good night’s sleep can leave you relaxed, energized, and ready to start the day, a bad night of sleep can leave you miserable.

We’ve all been there - you lay in bed for hours, knowing that if you don’t fall asleep soon you will have an awful day. And then, an hour before class or that big meeting, you finally do fall asleep - only to be awoken an hour later by your alarm to start what will surely be a long, long day.

The good news is that this scenario can be avoided. Following the steps in this guide will help you have a good night of sleep, and a great day. Everyday.

Eat Healthy and On-The-Go with a Smoothie Maker and these Recipes

August 21st, 2007 Josh

One of my favorite snacks or meals is a smoothie made with fresh fruit and healthy yogurt. However, at the places on campus a medium smooth is $5!!! So, I bought a smoothie maker of my own and started making them myself. Smoothies are healthy, cheap, fast, portable, and most importantly… delicious. Smoothies are also the perfect meal for college students.

In the guide below, I’ll show you the smoothie maker I use, some of my favorite recipes (including sites where you can find awesome Jamba Juice recipes), and the many benefits of adding some smoothies to your diet.

Take a social risk, talk to more people at parties

August 20th, 2007 Josh

30sleeps.com has a great article about finding the courage to talk to more people. They call it ’social skydiving’ and it begins with something as simple as saying “hi” to a person you don’t know. I really enjoyed this article and I hope you will too.

From the article:

Nothing has changed my world view, and my life, more than taking the risk of saying “Hi” to people I don’t know on a regular basis. Whether I’m walking down a busy shopping street, longboarding in the park, or out at a nightclub, I see every moment that I’m out in the world as a chance to meet new people.

I encourage you to try out the discussed techniques at the next party you go to. The article describes how you will inevitably face at least some rejection and you just have to accept that. Still, what better place to get rejected than a dimly lit party where most of the party-goers are drunk?

Productivity Hour: Get more done in an hour than many do in a day

August 15th, 2007 Josh

Establishing a ‘Productivity Hour’ is a way to set a daily routine and work towards accomplishing specific goals. Following this system every day will allow you to accomplish the tasks you don’t otherwise find time to do. It is a great way to eliminate procrastination, and will leave you feeling accomplished and energized before you start your day.

The Basics Divide one hour of each day into four fifteen minute blocks. Set aside each of these fifteen minute blocks towards reaching a desired goal (ideas below). Mixing up more enjoyable tasks with more challenging goals will make this hour of your day both something to look forward to and something to feel good about.

Use Google to download MP3s

August 15th, 2007 Josh

G2p.org is an easy to use site that helps you search Google for mp3 files. It is fun, safe, and easy to use! Below is the description of the service taken from their home page:

What does G2P do?
-G2P (Google to Person) uses some crafty Google searches to help locate open directories or otherwise shared files. These searches are nothing secret (In fact, take a look at the results, so you can see how it is done. However, it is much easier to remember g2p.org than these complex searches. Really I put this site together to make it easier on me, and then shared it with you.

Summer Project: Make some money on eBay

August 15th, 2007 Josh

So its not too late to start a summer project, right? There are still a few weeks left before school. Here’s a fun (maybe) project that will, at the very least, make you some money.

At some point, lets face it, your going to have to move all your crap out your parents house and trash or store. My parents just had my sister doing it after she recently graduated from grad school. Now imagine this: you’re finally done with school, job offers are flying, you have a life to set up… and you have to go to your parents house and clean out all your shit. I don’t look forward to it, so I did something about it.

I began selling everything I don’t want in my room on eBay, and throwing away what can’t be sold.
