Weekend Reading: Week #1

This is the first installment of a series of posts entitled Weekend Reading. A collection of some of the best articles from the week in news, the blogosphere, wikipedia articles, and more. This should give you something to do in the approximately three and a half hours on Saturday between waking up hungover from Friday and beginning to pre-game for Saturday night.

These articles have been hand selected, and already thoroughly enjoyed, by myself. I hope you will like them too. Leave your own favorite reading from this week in the comments,

The “Missing” 13th Amendment, an odd Constitution story This article delivers a fascinating look at evidence suggesting that one of the Amendments to the Constitution was more or less forgotten during the Civil War, and then replaced with the 13th Amendment we know and love today. From the article:

So this is either one of the worst things ever to happen to the Constitution, or one of the most elaborate web hoaxes ever.

Pen Spinning From Wikipedia, this article explains something we’ve all attempted at least once.  A great way to pass time in lecture, pen spinning is a sacred art. Check out what Wikipedia has to say:

Pen spinning is a form of contact juggling that involves the deft manipulation of a writing utensil with one’s hands. Although it is often considered a form of self-entertainment (usually in a school/office setting), multinational competitions and meetings are often held.

Multinational competitions? Count me in.

The Awkwardness Survival Guide is an awesome look at some of the most awkward situations that everyone will find themselves in at least once in their lives (and likely more). This article appears before you on my blog because it is true to life, and hilarious. It tells you how to get out of delicate situations like these:

When ending a phone conversation with a friend or colleague, you say “I love you,” a habitual flourish which has been drilled into your phone etiquette by years of conversations with your spouse or significant other.

Enjoy your weekend and happy reading.
