Write more letters to your friends
Recently, I’ve begun writing snail mail letters to my friends who have gone off to different colleges. It is a great way to stay in touch, it will make your friend feel good, and perhaps the best reason to write more letters is it is exciting to get a real letter back in reply. Plus, at the end of this post I have a way to send those letters free!
So what to write about? Let your friends know what you’ve been up to. Tell them the craziest thing that has happened to you in the last week, some gossip you heard, or just how your classes are going.
What you write maybe not even be as important as sending the letter itself. Just the act of writing and sending a letter will let your friend know that you were thinking of them and value their friendship. This is important, because it can be tough to maintain good relationships across great distances. But, a little bit of effort can fix whatever strains the distance puts on your friendships!
Get creative. Draw your own stationary, or include some doodles with the letter. Send them some pictures of what you’ve been up to. Or, record an audio message to your friend and burn it to a CD.
Make it last. If you write a letter to your friend and they write back, keep it going. Reply again and begin a lasting snail mail correspondence. Ask questions of your friends to probe them for another reply. Over time, keeping a folder with all the letters you receive will give you something to keep and look back on as a record of your college days.
Want to send out a bunch of letters but don’t want to pay for stamps? Snailer.com is a way to send stamped letters for free! At that site you can type a letter, and they will print it, stamp it, and mail to a friend. The catch? You have to accept one of their offers (like including a Papa John’s Pizza coupon in the letter). But still pretty cool.
Facebook wall posts and text messages aside, nothing beats opening the mailbox and seeing a hand addressed envelope written with love for you.
